Mumps was common in the United States until mumps vaccination became routine; now, outbreaks still occur among people who aren’t vaccinated.

Understanding Mumps

Mumps is a viral infection that primarily affects the parotid glands—one of three pairs of saliva-producing (salivary) glands, located below and in front of your ears.

Key Fact: Mumps was common in the United States until mumps vaccination became routine; now, outbreaks still occur among people who aren't vaccinated.

Common Symptoms

Swollen Salivary Glands

Swelling on one or both sides of the face, giving a 'chipmunk' appearance.

Pain while Chewing

Discomfort or sharp pain when eating or swallowing, especially acidic foods.

Fever

A moderate to high temperature that often starts a day or two before swelling.

Headache

General discomfort and pain in the head and neck area.

Risk Factors

  • Lack of vaccination (MMR)
  • Age (prevails in school-aged children)
  • Weakened immune system
  • Travel to areas with low vaccination rates

Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is usually based on visual symptoms and confirmed by a viral swab or blood test.

Common Treatments

  • Rest and Isolation: Staying home to prevent spread and allowing the body to recover.
  • Cold Compresses: Applying ice packs to the swollen glands to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Hydration: Drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding fruit juices that can irritate salivary glands.
