The male & female ratio is 2:1

More common in the elderly population.  More than ¾ cases are ischemic stroke. Regional variation of stroke prevalence has been noted.  Stroke prevalence is highest in the Mymensingh division.

Stroke is more common in elderly population but it can also occur in younger population with underlying heart conditions. In the context of our country, young people with underlying rheumatic heart disease frequently present with cardioembolic stroke. Some hematological conditions e.g., Sickle cell anemia can also cause stroke in younger population.  Some genetic diseases can cause stroke in younger population which is less common.

Risk factors of stroke are many but Hypertension, Diabetes, Dyslipidemia, smoking, obesity, positive Family history & heart diseases are the most important risk factors.
